Nunnery Wood Colts World Cup themed Girl’s tournament proved a massive success

Nunnery Wood Colts were delighted to host our first Girls’ Football Festival since the hugely successful inaugural event in 2019.

Held on Saturday 2 September 2023 at our home ground, Blessed Edward Oldcorne Catholic College in Worcester, the Lionesses-inspired six-a-side tournament welcomed 47 teams from 16 clubs across the Midlands for a fantastic day of girls’ football.

The festival featured around 190 matches across six age groups – Under 10s, Under 11s, Under 12s, Under 13s, Under 14s and Under 16s. The event was supported by 16 fully qualified referees, including several female officials, helping to ensure every game was played in a positive and enjoyable environment.

Tournament Highlights

Nunnery Wood’s own Coyotes enjoyed an excellent run to the Mary Earps Under 10s Final, where they were narrowly defeated 1-0 by Redditch Borough Lionesses.

The Chloe Kelly Under 12s Final saw local rivals Kewford Eagles Pink and Kewford Eagles Green go head-to-head, with the Pink team edging a closely contested derby 1-0.

One of the most exciting moments of the day came in the Lauren Hemp Under 14s Final, which finished goalless before SJB claimed the trophy with a dramatic 4-3 penalty shootout victory.

Inkberrow Eagles were the standout club of the tournament, winning both the Lucy Bronze Under 11s and Keira Walsh Under 16s titles, while also finishing runners-up in the Millie Bright Under 13s and Lauren Hemp Under 14s competitions.

Tournament Organiser’s Comments

Tournament organiser and Nunnery Wood Pythons Under 16s manager said:

“As a club, we were delighted that the tournament was such a success. It was fantastic to see so many girls playing, developing their skills and enjoying their football. Coaches, volunteers and parents from across the club came together to ensure everything ran smoothly, and we are already looking forward to hosting an even bigger and better event next year.”
